Wildlife Center Reports Death Of Snowy Owl In Greene

Richmond Times Dispatch, January 2, 2009

"Greene County’s Arctic visitor, the Snowy Owl, did not survive his journey. On the Monday before Christmas, Dr. Dave McRuer, director of veterinary services at the Wildlife Center of Virginia, said that two days earlier someone had brought in a sick snowy owl from Greene. The bird was found on the ground near a pipeline."

JABA Rezoning Request Rejected

"Greene County’s Planning Commission unanimously rejected a request by the Jefferson Area Board of Aging (JABA) to rezone 15.16 acres located near Preddy Creek Road and Harlowedge in Ruckersville. Rezoning would make way for up to 225 housing units for low-to-moderate income seniors. The decision was made at the body’s monthly meeting on Wednesday, December 17. "

Small Builders Feel The Squeeze

"Jamie Wayland, president of the local O’Jennings Home Builders, says the building boom in Greene is over: the big builders that moved into the area when it hit are moving on, and small builders are left out in the cold. Wayland says some of his fellow local builders are filing for bankruptcy. But others, including Wayland and Wendell Gibson of Gibson Homes, are advocating change and asking for help from local leaders."

Wal-mart Construction To Soon Begin

"If all goes as planned, Gateway Center in Ruckersville will be completed by 2012, and Wal-Mart - the project’s remaining anchor store - will open by the end of 2009. Bob Pingry, project manager for Gateway Center, expects construction on the much-anticipated Wal-Mart Supercenter to be well underway by March. In fact, Greene County Building Official Steve Borders says that an engineer for Wal-Mart is “getting all of his necessary permits” and hopes to seal a contractor within the next four weeks. "

School Yard Habitat Allows Nathanael Greene Students To Observe Nature

"Students at Nathanael Greene Elementary School are being afforded a unique opportunity to observe nature through observation by creating a schoolyard habitat. Ms. Kate Kraus, the art teacher at NGES, is helping students construct the habitat, which is behind the school. Plans include a small pond, seven mini-habitats, and a tracking box to observe various animal tracks. "

Preddy Creek Rezoning Request Deferred

"Faced with neighborhood opposition and concerns by Greene County’s Planning Commission, the Jefferson Area Board of Aging (JABA) deferred a request to rezone 16 acres of land on Preddy Creek Road in Ruckersville. Rezoning would make way for up to 225 housing units for low-to-moderate-income seniors. "

Ruckersville Development Gets Board Nod

"Roughly three years ago, local resident Andrea Wilkinson decided to start a group aimed at preserving a particular quality of life in Ruckersville. The group, dubbed the Ruckersville Citizens Council (RCC), took on such grassroots projects as beautifying streetscapes and putting up signs. It also began to hold monthly meetings in the form of roundtable discussions. Today, the Ruckersville Citizen Council has become one of the most visible and vocal citizens’ groups in the County, commanding the attention of many of Greene’s top decision makers. "

The retail giant announced to the Record back in June 2007 that it expected to begin construction on a new Wal-Mart Supercenter in Ruckersville in Spring 2008, hopefully to open sometime in late 2009. "

The farm has been recognized and honored by the Virginia Century Farm Program for being in operation for at least 100 consecutive years. In fact, Runkle’s Stonewall Farm has been in operation -and in his family - for more than 200 years. "

Road Bumps?

"To pave or not to pave. That was the question for residents of the County’s backcountry roads at Greene’s Board of Supervisor’s meeting July 8. A total of twelve citizens spoke to the issue. Some residents of Stanardsville’s Middle River Road even presented the Board with a petition to stop the scheduled paving of that road. "
